Earless Dragon artificial arthropod burrows - 'Spider Tubes'
Artificial arthropod burrows - colloquially known as 'Spider tubes' - are used as a survey methodology for several species of Earless Dragons Tympanocryptis spp.
Designed for Victorian Grasslands Earless Dragon Tympanocryptis pinguicolla surveys, Agamid Tech offers a simple, cost effective option for this survey method.
Each unit consists of three parts: Outer tube, inner tube and a roof.
Outer tubes are installed into the soil, which the inner 'spider tube' inserted into. This acts as artificial refuge for target species, where they become more detectable. When being surveyed the inner tube is easily removed for inspection or retrieval of fauna. A roof is installed over the tube entrance, which can be swiveled out of the way.
The Tube
Agamid Tech has custom designed artificial spider tubes to comply with the requirements of the existing federal guidelines, and provide a targeted, cost-effective solution for survey program.
Interior topology to mimic natural Lycosidae burrow texture, which provides excellent purchase and climability for fauna.
Easily and quickly installed, lightweight and durable.
Quick release detachable base to ensure fauna or eggs can be removed quickly without harm - and allows for easy cleaning.
PVC outer tube for durability during installation and removal.
Inner tube made from UV and weather resistant plastic to ensure many survey periods worth of usage.
Optional plate for marking/serialising or retaining a small tag
The Roof
Agamid tech has prototyped dozens of designs to create a simple, cost effective yet durable roof solution for VGED surveys.
Suitable for the real-world conditions of the Victorian Volcanic Plains, our spider tube shelters/roofs are made from advanced polymer suitable for Australian heat and UV conditions.
Simple hinged legs make transport, storage, installation and adjustment for spider tube checks easy - and a chunky 5mm diameter will minimize bending when inserting into soil, while still being light weight for remote installs.
Metal options are being prototyped and are coming soon.
